So, you think you want to write for a living but aren’t sure where to start. Books and literature in many forms have been around since the very early years of human civilization. Since there are so many options, it is not possible to predict what salary you can expect. As a writer, the effort you put into a project will be reflected in what you produce. Also keep in mind that, especially if you are working on a book, you will likely get more rejections than acceptance letters. It doesn’t matter how many publishers reject your work, it only takes one to get your novel onto bookstore shelves.

Getting an education to write is not as simple as going to admissions and saying, “I want a writer degree.” You will need to major in an appropriate field. English, composition, communications, public relations, and journalism are all great majors for potential writers. If you wish to write about specific subjects such as politics, film, history or religion, consider minoring, or at least studying, in those fields.
Most colleges offer some form of online degree program. Many of those will allow you to attend college exclusively online. Your will log into a web interface which will organize your classes, assignments, grades and relevant information for you. Your instructor will provide you with study materials in audio, video, or text files as well as assigning textbook or other reading assignments. Although there is often a schedule to keep you on track with the class, how and when you study is largely up to you. For this reason, many instructors allow their students to complete their courses well ahead of schedule. With the ease of online degrees, especially for those wanting to learn how to become a writer, all that is left to do is find the right school and get started on your future.
