How to Become a Computer Programmer

If you look at anything around you right now, chances are a computer programmer had something to do with it’s creation, especially if it uses batteries or electricity. Almost everything in our lives is “connected” in some way and to be “connected” it uses programs, written by computer programmers. When you research how to become a computer programmer, you will most likely recognize many of the languages used (like C++ and Java) and be overwhelmed by the rest (like Oracle, C#, etc.). Don’t be discouraged, computer programmers are needed at an alarming rate and as you look at going back to school to learn how to be a programmer, you need to only worry about a couple things upfront.

What is it Like to Be a Computer Programmer?

Computer programmers are integral to our world. Calculators, cell phones, video games, special effects in movies (the software used is programmed after all), business software, ATM machines, and on and on, are all controlled through computer programs.

As an entry level programmer you should expect a salary in the mid 50 thousand range with near limitless earning potential as you gain experience. For example, as a video game programmer, you are more than capable of moving from programming, to lead, to designer, to head of a programming company. Just ensure that you form your schooling around that goal. Take business and communication courses or other appropriate classes that will help you work towards your goals.

What Kind of Schooling Do I need to Become a Computer Programmer?

Learning how to become a computer programmer is going to require a stint in college, but most likely a very fun stint. You should expect to take science, math and logic courses in addition to your programming languages. Most languages will require multiple courses, but after some research you will see that there are a few basic languages, like C++, that are a great start. Once you learn those, the rest are significantly easier.

Your main focus when you go back to college will be a study of computer science and your chosen language (for most students this is C++). Through school you will be creating and debugging (fixing) programs as well as editing programs to do different functions.

Online degree programs will be a great and easy way to go back to college to obtain your degree. You’ll need a bachelor’s degree in computer science for this field. You will be able to find some lower level work with an associate’s degree to help you get experience early, but expect a four year degree minimum. With an online degree you will do all of your school work through a web interface provided by your school.

Many schools offer online degrees. Some are online only, with no physical campus, while others are traditional schools that offer online classes as well as classroom study. Online study is at your pace with due dates for tests and assignments. Online degree programs are a great way to go back to college with little impact on your personal life. Do a little research into the schools and you will be well on your way to this rewarding and in-demand career.
